Bored with Job Boards - How to Find the Best

So how many job search boards do you think there are? 50? 200? Thousands? This is, of course a rhetorical question because I'm not sure that anyone knows the answer (but I am willing to be proved wrong).

Jobs from the Best, Biggest and Most Admired Companies - Vol I

My first major in college was music. My "dream" was to be a successful entertainer. The definition of "success", of course, is much like the definition of "happiness". It is a personal definition that is particular to the individual ("one man's success is another man's hell").

Patience is a Virtue (but a job would be better) - Wish Upon a Job Part III

A friend of mine found out that their job would be ending in 6 to 12 months. That sounded like more than enough time to find a great job with time to spare. Plenty of time to be patient and pick the best opportunity. Of course, that was 5 months ago and now it looks like their job will end in another 2 to 3 months.

Wish Upon a Job - Executing on Your Job Search Plan - Part II

A friend of mine has been "looking for a job" for a very long time. When I press him on what he as actually done, the answer is "I'm going to ramp it up this week. Job search by divine intervention generally doesn't work and, at the end of the day, it's all about getting things done.

Reinvent Your Career and Job Search - Part 2

Today's post focuses on reinventing your job search. Similar reinventing your career, there countless reasons why you would (and should) reinvent your job search. Maybe you've been our of the job search market for a few years (or longer) and need to adjust to the ever changing online job search process.

Reinvent Your Career and Job Search - Part 1

I ran into an old friend (metaphorically speaking) that I used to work with very early in my career. We hadn't been in contact for probably 12 years or so even though we spent 11 years (across two companies) working together way back when.  When we worked together, he was not your average guy. He was a very successful business man, near the top of his field. A typical "type A" personality, but if he liked you he would go out of his way to help you.

Shades of Gray - Offer Letters

One of my friends received a job offer last week. The position was with a stable company, higher pay (after lots of back and forth), better benefits and more responsibility. This particular opportunity was through a headhunter (there is a reason I'm using this phrase, read on) and there was some negotiation required. Unfortunately, the headhunter could care less about ensuring the fit was good on both sides (employer and candidate).

Who's Hiring in Finance Vol 2- Targeted Job Search

Very tough times at work lately. So, in order to put some hope in my day, I went off and purchased a lottery ticket. I'm not sure about you, but for me buying a lottery ticket provides some glimmer of possibly better times to come. From the moment of purchase until the lottery numbers are drawn I think about all of the ways I will spend the money and how much better (I think) my life will be. That, of course, all comes to an end when the numbers are drawn and at best I win $2 or generally nothing at all. Been there yourself? But, I am a realist and I know that the only way I might better my lot in life (or at least my job) is to be proactive in finding a better job (but one can always dream about winning the lottery).

5 Great Resources for Finding and Leveraging a Recruiter

A coworker of mine is a "starving" musician. He is constantly looking to be "discovered". While he gets gigs now and then, the likelihood of being discovered in a restaurant while performing is very low.
